Class Descriptions

Yin

Yin Yoga has its roots in China, unlike the more popular and active yoga disciplines, which originated in India. It was founded on the Taoist theory of yin and yang – opposite concepts that, together, represent balance. Yin is stable and passive, while yang is changing and active. The yin poses, therefore, are passive and performed while seated or in a reclining position. The poses are held with the muscles fully relaxed, allowing time and gravity to deepen the stretch and target the fascia. The time spent holding these asanas is similar to meditation.

Womens Hormone Balancing Yoga

A gentle nourishing Yoga Therapy Style class that promotes the flow of blood and Chi into the specific endocrine glands and organs that play a key role in hormonal balance.
Whilst simultaneously reconnecting us to the more feminine aspects of our "being" nature, inherent in embodying, feeling, sensing and intuiting on the mat.
Assisting the alleviation of menstrual and menopausal discomfort, such as mood swings, fatigue, PMS, lower back pain, cramps, heaviness, hot flushes, irritability, anxiety and depression.
Helping to cultivate tools that restore a calm and stable connection to our centre, throughout the changing cycles of a woman's life.

Vinyasa Yoga

Connecting breath to movement....The focus of this practice is on synchronising fluid movement to the rhythm of the breath. This works to draw the mind to a deeper focus and open to internal body awareness. The breath slows down and deepens, muscles soften, joints open, blood, flows and the cleansing purification process begins. Intro is aimed at those just beginning their yoga journey or those wants to slow things down and hone their practice. These classes can be both offered as dynamic and in a more gentle versions, check the timetable for one that suits your needs.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha is a very broad term that encompasses any of the physical practices of yoga. It can be used to describe every kind of yoga asana practice from Iyengar to Ashtanga and everything that falls between and beyond.  In fact, any of the many types of contemperory yoga that are popular today can be accurately described as hatha yoga.
Given that the word has such an open meaning, what should you expect if you attend a hatha yoga class? Today, Hatha is most often used to describe gentle, basic yoga classes with no flow between poses. Expect a slower-paced stretching-focused class with some basic pranayama breathing exercises and perhaps a seated meditation at the end. Hatha classes are a good place to work on your alignment, learn relaxation techniques, and become comfortable with doing yoga while building strength and flexibility.

Yoga Therapy

While any type of yoga can bring health benefits, yoga therapy involves employing a variety of yoga practices to try to improve a health condition or to ease a natural process, such as pregnancy or menopause. Among the yogic tools used therapeutically are asana (the physical postures), Pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation, and guided imagery. Although many people don't realize it, yogis also consider diet an integral part of yoga and therefore of yoga therapy. Melina brings all of these ideas together as well as using the seasons and the elements of chinese medicine meriidan system to inform her sequencing.

Iyengar

Iyengar Yoga, named after and developed by B. K. S. Iyengar, is a form of Hatha Yoga that has an emphasis on detail, precision and alignment in the performance of posture (asana) and breath control (pranayama). The development of strength, mobility and stability is gained through the asanas.B.K.S. Iyengar has systematised over 200 classical yoga poses and 14 different types of Pranayama (with variations of many of them) ranging from the basic to advanced. This helps ensure that students progress gradually by moving from simple poses to more complex ones and develop their mind, body and spirit through a step-by-step approach.Iyengar Yoga often makes use of props, such as belts, blocks, and blankets, as aids in performing asanas (postures). The props enable students to perform the asanas correctly, minimising the risk of injury or strain, and making the postures accessible to both young and old.
